Walter Koenig, the actor who portrayed Pavel Chekov on the original Star Trek series, has died at age 90.

His representative, talent agent Zachery McGinnis, confirmed the news on Monday. Koenig passed away at his home in the North Hollywood neighborhood of Los Angeles.

The actor's death leaves two surviving marquee cast members from the show that ran on NBC from 1966 to 1969. William Shatner, 95, who played Capt. James T. Kirk, and George Takei, 89, who played Hikaru Sulu, remain. The original series featured 79 episodes across three seasons.

Koenig first joined the Enterprise crew during the second season of the show. The character was introduced to reflect the diverse nationalities aboard the starship in the 23rd century. Koenig reprised the role in seven subsequent films. These include Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan in 1982, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock in 1984, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home in 1986, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier in 1989, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country in 1991, and Star Trek Generations in 1994.

Takei, who served as best man at Koenig's wedding in 2008, shared a tribute on Instagram. Takei noted that Koenig was born on Sept. 14, 1936, which is the same date as his own wedding anniversary. "Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades," Takei wrote. He described Koenig as a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend.

McGinnis highlighted Koenig's enduring connection to the franchise. The agent noted that Koenig performed voice-over work for Star Trek video games. He also made a cameo appearance in the 2023 series Star Trek: Picard. McGinnis stated that Koenig consistently engaged with fans at conventions and shared his kindness and wit with those who met him.

Koenig began his television career in the early 1960s. He appeared in productions such as General Hospital and I Spy before landing the Chekov role in 1967. He later held a recurring position on the science fiction series Babylon 5 during the 1990s. Despite other projects, he frequently returned to the Star Trek universe.

The actor continued working into his final years. He received the best actor award at this year's Independent Shorts Awards for his performance in Mr. Fleischmann.
