The Walt Disney Co. and Channel 4 will merge the U.K. public broadcaster's live HD channel and on-demand catalogue into Disney+ starting in early 2027. The arrangement allows subscribers in the U.K. and Ireland to access Channel 4 content within the existing streaming interface without paying an additional fee.
The deal includes a day-and-date release structure for select series. Dramas such as Maya, starring Bella Ramsey, and comedies like Stepping Up, featuring Denise Welch, will appear on both platforms simultaneously. The agreement also covers the reality format Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins and other unscripted titles.
Channel 4 content will occupy a branded section within the Disney+ app. This section will mirror the navigation and user experience of the rest of the streaming service. The integration aims to place Channel 4 programming alongside Disney's library of film and Hulu's general entertainment slate.
This partnership follows similar agreements Disney+ struck with ITV, Italy's RAI, Germany's ARD and ZDF, Portugal's SIC, and Spain's RTVE and Atresmedia. Karl Holmes, general manager for Disney+ in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, described the Channel 4 deal as the most ambitious collaboration yet in the region.
Holmes noted that free-to-air broadcasters in Europe possess the largest production budgets and audience reach. He stated that the next phase of Disney+ growth in the region will be driven by local content. The company added 30 percent more subscribers in the EMEA region over the last 18 months.
Demographic data from U.K. measurement firm BARB illustrates the strategic fit. Only 3 percent of Channel 4 viewing hours come from people aged 4 to 15. On Disney+, that age group accounts for 17 percent of viewing hours. The 16 to 34 age bracket represents 10 percent of Channel 4 viewership compared to 39 percent on Disney+.
Channel 4 CEO Priya Dogra said the partnership aligns with the broadcaster's digital-first strategy. She explained that the deal helps reach viewers who may not currently consume Channel 4 programming. Dogra emphasized that the Channel 4 brand and identity will remain distinct within the Disney+ environment.
Adam Smith, chairman of direct-to-consumer operations at Disney Entertainment, said local broadcaster partnerships are central to building global content libraries. He said the agreement pairs culturally relevant U.K. programming with a complementary audience base.
Financial terms of the pact were not disclosed. Both executives indicated the partnership may expand to include additional Disney content on Channel 4. Dogra noted the broadcaster already licenses titles like The Simpsons and This Is Us. Holmes said he hopes the relationship evolves into a wider agreement.
Further details on specific launch dates and the initial content lineup will be released in the coming weeks. The integration is scheduled to begin in early 2027.
